Athletics

The Cluny School Athletic Program was established to allow any interested student in grades 4 through 8, who meets appropriate academic standards, to learn and participate in a variety of sports. These include soccer, basketball, cross-country and sailing.  The Athletic Program is staffed by  Cluny Faculty members. Parent volunteers for all programs are encouraged.

Soccer

Soccer is offered to boys and girls in the fall for grades 5 through 8 and in the spring for grades 4 through 8.  Students compete against other teams through participation in two leagues: the spring, state-wide Catholic Athletic League, and the fall, Recreation League set up by Cluny. The Cluny fall league competes against area schools and recreational teams.  Home games take place on Cluny's soccer field.

Note: Each year the Fall Soccer team travels via ferry to Block Island for a day of soccer and family fun.

Basketball

Basketball is offered to boys and girls in grades 6 through 8. Students in grades 6 through 8 compete against other local teams in a league organized by the City of Newport Recreation Department.  Games are played at the City of Newport Recreation Department facility (The Hut) and St. Michaels School. Practices take place at Cluny and the Newport Athletic Club.

Cross Country

Cross Country is offered to students in grades 4 through 8. Students practice on the school grounds and compete amongst four private schools from Aquidneck Island. Our home meets are run both on the school grounds and at the beautiful Fort Adams State Park. The season lasts from mid-September until the end of October.

Sailing

Parent volunteers run a sailing program in spring and/or fall in conjunction with Sail Newport. The program is based on the availability of parent volunteers. The sailing program is held at nearby Fort Adams State Park, on the beautiful Newport Harbor, in cooperation with Sail Newport.
