Our History begins during the French Revolution when a young girl, Anne-Marie Javouhey, heard the call to help others through her faith in God. Anne-Marie Javouhey set out to teach the faith, to defend the defenseless and to bring the Word to peoples outside of Europe. She was one of the first women to establish missions in Africa. In the New World, she is known as the Liberator of the Slaves and Mother of the colony in Mana, French Guyana. She was convinced that every human being is called to the liberty of the children of God.
The sisters today share in this same spirit of her gift for evangelization. The sisters strive to bring hope and compassion to our anguished world. They gather in community for the service of the church and all God’s people. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny are represented in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America as well as throughout many of the West Indian and South Pacific Islands. Whether teachers, lawyers, medical personnel, social workers, parish workers, spiritual directors, counselors or women retired from ministry, Cluny Sisters cherish the call to mission, “to make God’s love known throughout the world”.
Thirty-five sisters continue to carry out this calling in the Province of USA and Canada. Sisters provide catechetical, pastoral, educational, spiritual, healthcare, and community-based ministries in Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arkansas, California, and Canada. Our ministry in the Province of USA and Canada also assists our sisters in mission countries such as, Sierra Leone and The Gambia in West Africa, Haiti, India and the Philippines. The Sisters coordinate the Propagation of the Faith Mission Appeal, which directly supports our West African missions. They have been very involved in directing disaster relief for our sisters in Haiti, Grenada, and India.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny continue to strive to promote peace, justice and the dignity of the human person. This was the spirit of Blessed Anne-Marie Javouhey and it continues to be spread throughout the world as 3000 Cluny Sisters carry it to their places of ministry each day.
